Equine Homeschool Programming

We currently offer two unique programs for homeschool students: “Riding and Horsemanship” and “Unbridled Vaulting Club”

Children with Amigo.

Participants in Life Adventure Center’s Homeschool Riding program learn about horse care and hunt-seat riding in a supportive, educational environment. In addition to teaching riding skills, the equine staff utilizes horses as a tool to teach and enhance important life skills and promote positive character traits, and gain insight into behaviors. Horses also have the ability to help students increase their confidence and academic achievement.   In this program, students will: learn how to communicate and build trust with their horses , develop vocational skills such as grooming, bandaging, and taking vital signs, and ride in hunt-seat group lessons. Students also reflect on the day’s activities through journal writing, and relate what they have learned with the horses to real life situations.

Vaulting participants.

Vaulting is a unique equestrian sport that combines dance and gymnastics on the back of a moving horse. It is one of the best ways to introduce people to the joy of riding horses is a safe, dynamic environment. Vaulting is documented as being the safest equestrian sport. During vaulting, a lunger is in control of the horse’s speed and direction on a circle which frees the participant to focus on their body and the movement of the horse.  A barrel is a stationary substitute for the horse, and allows vaulters to develop and perfect moves before moving on to the horse, and improves safety. Participants can all progress at their own pace while being a part of a team with the horse, lunger, coach, and other vaulters.

While going through the process of learning how to perform safely and with respect to their partners and the horse, vaulters learn a lot about how to challenge themselves and develop trust with those around them. Vaulting provides participants with the benefits of working on and around the horse at all three gaits which can improve balance, strength, body awareness, coordination and flexibility. Vaulting also improves social skills and behavior through building confidence, encouraging social interaction, and fostering independence.

Students in this class will learn about horse care and basic vaulting technique. A typical vaulting session includes warm-up and stretching, practice on the barrel (mock horse).
